An academic critique of Mainstream Austrian Economics as well as mainstream economic theory. Prof. Fekete's critique in this book is pointed towards the inept mainstream theory but also at the contradiction in Mises handling of the intrest rate formation and its link with the use of a proper gold standard. The gold standard envisaged would be an unadulterated standard, free from ideological constraints and political sabotage. This fresh and unencumbered study of the gold standard has been acknowledged by people with some knowledge of Mises and Menger, but never explicitly formulated. This critique is not an attack on Mises, simply a supplementation of the never-ending search for truth. It establishes the nexus between the unadulterated gold standard and economic freedom as well as responsibility. It leaves behind the stigma of socio-economic Darwinism, attached deservedly, to the adulterers and so-cold protectors of the gold standard of old. Prof. Fekete provides both logical and reasonable arguments for reinstating a gold standard, but without the mistakes of the past. The search for economic truth, we know, is hardly undertaken by mainstream economics science, plagued by Saint-Simonean and Comtean positivism and laced with spurious mathematics. This essay remains an academic expose, for all people engaged with the work of von Mises. A gold standard is not your enemy, but the only ally you have to regain economic freedom and responsibility. A proper gold standard would discipline all, especially banks and governments.
